EVENT: Don Giovanni: A Pandemic Nightmare
LOCATION: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mwa428_ZJpI
DESCRIPTION: When the pandemic swept accross the U.S., summer opera programs across the country, designed to help young singers build their experience and resumes, fell like dominoes. The New York Opera Conservatory had a similar and difficult decision to make. We decided to make it happen anyway, within the guidelines and rules set forth by the state of New York. But how does one maintain social distancing in opera rehearsals and performances? We decided that the only way to make it work legitimately was to make the pandemic part of the production. By reimagining Giovanni as a comedy taking place during a pandemic, we were able to create a world relying on internet connections and cell phones. Not only was the entire opera shot on iPhones, but every special effect we could employ on the phones was used throughout the production. Using everything from snapchat filters and tinder messaging accounts to turning the tenor aria “Il mio tesoro” into a home cooking show, the opera shows us just how bizarre and surreal our world has become.
